First Deputy Chairman of the Federation Council Committee on International Affairs Vladimir Dzhabarov said the Baltic states are playing a dangerous game by making calls for strikes on Kaliningrad Region.
His remarks came in response to Lithuanian Foreign Minister Kestutis Budris, who recently urged European countries to attack Kaliningrad. Dzhabarov argued that such rhetoric is aimed at giving the Lithuanian minister greater political weight in Brussels. He also pointed out that the statement was made shortly before the NATO summit in Ankara.
The senator stressed that Kaliningrad Region is part of Russia and warned that any attack on it would bring severe consequences for Lithuania. In his view, Budris’s remarks effectively amount to putting his own citizens’ country at risk.
Dzhabarov also dismissed Budris’s claim that Lithuania and the other Baltic states could strengthen NATO’s confidence and capabilities. According to the senator, the Baltic countries still fail to understand that the West treats them as expendable, just as it does Ukraine. He believes that in a real crisis, the Baltic states may not receive the support they expect from their NATO allies.
