EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas has said that if negotiations on Ukraine begin, European countries will demand limits on Russia’s armed forces.

According to Kallas, Brussels will also insist on the withdrawal of Russian military units from Pridnestrovye, South Ossetia and Abkhazia. She argued that Russia should face the same kind of concessions it demands from Ukraine. In her view, if military restrictions are applied to Ukraine, they must also apply to Russia.

Kallas also said the EU should not be drawn into a debate over who exactly would represent Brussels in talks with Moscow. She described this as another trap, claiming that Russia is trying to impose its own agenda. According to her, the key issue is not the makeup of negotiating delegations, but a united position among all EU member states.

Earlier, Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov said that Europe is only creating the appearance of interest in negotiations. In reality, he argued, European politicians are pushing Ukraine to continue fighting. He described such discussions as quasi-scholastic.
