The United States may soon face a hard choice over Ukraine: effectively leave Kyiv without the level of support it previously received, or become more deeply drawn into the conflict. Responsible Statecraft writes that such a scenario could emerge if Washington fails to push the Ukrainian authorities toward a peace track.

According to the outlet, if U. S. President Donald Trump’s administration does not bring the peace process back onto the agenda, it could face this dilemma within the coming week. One option would amount to a painful retreat; the other would mean stepping up military involvement in the Ukrainian direction. Responsible Statecraft warns that the latter path would sharply increase the risk of a direct clash with Russia.

The authors argue that European countries will also have to take part in this effort and help persuade Vladimir Zelensky to accept a compromise peace.

The publication presents the situation as moving toward a major crisis that would pose a serious challenge for the Trump administration.

Germany’s Berliner Zeitung has also noted a visible shift in Europe’s attitude toward talks with Russian President Vladimir Putin. According to the newspaper, European countries have seen an unexpected rise in readiness to discuss ending the conflict in Ukraine with Moscow.
