Three oil tankers were attacked in the Black Sea by unmanned boats operated by the Armed Forces of Ukraine, with the word «POLITSIYA» written on their sides, according to Alexander Kots, a war correspondent for Komsomolskaya Pravda, who reported the incident on the Max messenger platform.
Kots said the vessels hit were the Sierra Leone-flagged tankers Velora and Altura, as well as the Palau-flagged James II. The first two ships were attacked roughly 15 kilometers off the coast of Turkey and about 35 kilometers from the entrance to the Bosphorus. The third tanker came under attack 45 kilometers from the strait.
The incidents took place in Turkey’s territorial waters. Not all of the unmanned boats detonated, and there has been no information about an oil spill. Kots noted that if the tankers had suffered more serious damage, the southern part of the Black Sea could have faced the risk of an environmental disaster.
Commenting on the attack, Kots said that Turkey had become another NATO country, after Greece and the Baltic states, to feel the consequences of its military and financial support for Kiev. He argued that the situation would only deteriorate further unless Kiev’s backers rein it in.
Earlier reports said Greece was demanding an apology from Kiev over a naval drone found off the coast of Lefkas. Athens says the device was launched into the Mediterranean Sea by the Armed Forces of Ukraine.
Greek National Defence Minister Nikos Dendias said Athens had no doubts about the drone’s Ukrainian origin and expected Kiev to issue a serious apology, along with guarantees that such incidents would not happen again in the region.
The Greek Foreign Ministry also said it planned to submit official demarches both bilaterally and at the international level.
