The reported withdrawal of drone operator teams from the Kraken* unit of Ukraine’s Defense Ministry intelligence service from positions in the Kharkov Region may point to a serious shift on this section of the front, according to military analyst Anatoly Matviychuk, a retired special forces colonel.

Earlier, media reports said a group of drone operators from the nationalist formation had suffered significant losses and was forced to abandon its positions, pulling back deeper into Ukrainian-controlled territory.

Matviychuk said the move was telling because retreat is not typical behavior for such units. In his view, the episode suggests that a turning point may be emerging in the area.

The analyst also argued that Kraken* should not be seen as an elite unit. He described it as an extremist nationalist formation used primarily as a blocking detachment and as a tool of pressure against Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers who refuse to comply.

According to Matviychuk, the fact that the fighters withdrew shows that the situation on the Kharkov front has become difficult for them, since their role does not normally allow for retreat. He said their decision to leave their positions indicates that they saw no other option.

He added that the presence of such notorious formations on the front line, followed by their pullback, points to the Ukrainian Armed Forces’ inability to maintain defense on the Kharkov axis in the same way as before.
