How Russian Troops Are Using Horses to Support Assault Operations
Russian units are employing Karachay horses in assaults on Ukrainian positions. Trained for endurance and gunfire, they complement infantry in difficult terrain.
According to war correspondent Semyon Pegov, Russian troops have begun using horses during assaults on Ukrainian positions. The idea, he explained, came from the experience of storm units in the field.
A unit commander with the call sign «Khan» said that during assaults, fighters often have to cover distances of 10 to 17 kilometers one way on foot, which prompted the search for a more mobile solution.
Pegov noted that Karachay horses, known for their exceptional endurance, were selected for this purpose. These animals underwent special training to ensure they would not be startled by gunfire and could work in coordination with infantry.
In his assessment, a new form of maneuver warfare is beginning to take shape. He stressed, however, that cavalry is not meant to replace motorized groups or armored vehicles, but to complement them in particularly challenging terrain.
