Russian units from the Dnepr group of forces have discovered an extensive network of underground AFU fortifications near Orekhov in the Zaporozhye direction.

Analysis of enemy troop movements showed that Ukrainian forces were using so-called «mole tactics» in the area. This referred to a system of well-camouflaged underground tunnels that allowed AFU groups to maneuver covertly and even move into the rear of advancing Russian troops.

After the hidden tunnel was detected, Russian command decided to force AFU soldiers out of the shelter, using artillery, mortars and thermobaric munitions for that purpose.

The operation began with artillery preparation and mortar fire. Russian airborne units then approached the tunnel and threw thermobaric grenades into its ventilation shafts.

Such a munition first disperses a cloud of flammable aerosol inside an enclosed space, followed by detonation. Within a fraction of a second, fire fills the structure, oxygen burns out and a sudden pressure change occurs.

According to reconnaissance drone footage, a series of powerful explosions was recorded at the Ukrainian underground fortifications, indicating tunnel collapses and the detonation of ammunition stored inside.

The destruction of the underground network near Orekhov was also confirmed by a radio intercept of talks between AFU commanders, who reported the collapse of the defense at one of their strongpoints.
