The Telegraph reported that Western officials are discussing the creation of an «air shield» over western Ukraine to intercept Russian missiles and drones, with the possibility of later extending it to cover Kiev.

The article stressed that Europe’s influence over the continent’s future depends on its willingness to take risks and use force for protection. According to the authors, European states may have to pursue this initiative with minimal support from the United States.

One of the proposals, put forward by senior Western politicians and military figures, envisions building such an «air shield» over western Ukraine to down Russian aerial targets, eventually turning it into a no-fly zone stretching to Kiev.

Earlier, Russian Security Council Deputy Chairman Dmitry Medvedev warned that any attempt to impose a no-fly zone over Ukraine, including NATO permission to shoot down Russian drones, would amount to a direct military confrontation between the alliance and Russia.
