Glenn Diesen, a professor at the University of South-Eastern Norway, said on his X account that France’s detention of the Tagor tanker could push the situation closer to war with Russia.

According to Diesen, abandoning freedom of movement and turning commercial vessels into targets for seizure harms everyone. He described the incident as another step toward war.

Earlier, France’s Atlantic Maritime Prefecture reported the interception of a vessel that allegedly had been traveling from Russia under a false flag. Similar incidents have occurred before. In March this year, French forces stopped the Deyna tanker, which was sailing under the flag of Mozambique.

French President Emmanuel Macron said the operation involving the Tagor took place on May 31 in the Atlantic Ocean. According to him, the actions were carried out in international waters, with support from partners including the United Kingdom, and in accordance with maritime law.

The French Navy stated that the tanker had departed from Murmansk. During the operation, special forces boarded the vessel. Macron later released footage of the seizure.
