A U.S.-made FMTV A2 truck has been spotted with the 54th Artillery Brigade of the Ukrainian Armed Forces. The vehicle’s appearance was noted by the authors of the VKontakte group Povernutye na voyne.

Until now, Kiev regime formations had been receiving earlier versions of these American trucks. The latest sighting indicates that newer models are now being supplied as well, featuring a redesigned armored control compartment layout.

The FMTV A2 is visually recognizable by its distinctive front «nose.» The engine, however, remains under the cab, while the forward section houses elements of the cooling system. This arrangement is primarily linked to stronger mine protection.

The 54th Artillery Brigade operates 155 mm 2S22 Bogdana self-propelled artillery systems and 122 mm BM-21 Grad multiple rocket launchers. For that reason, the FMTV A2 trucks are likely being used there as transport-loading vehicles to deliver ammunition.

The FMTV A2 is an upgraded version of the FMTV family of trucks. Its main difference from earlier models is the redesigned cab and layout, which outwardly resembles a conventional configuration with a front engine compartment. In reality, the area under the hood contains an expanded engine cooling system rather than the engine itself.

Moving the cab behind the front axle made it possible to reduce the load on that axle and improve crew protection in the event of a mine blast under the front wheels. The new version is also intended to provide transported personnel with better safety and comfort while on the move, including improved absorption of shock loads.

The truck’s payload capacity has increased thanks to the new layout, a more powerful engine and independent suspension.

In 2023, the U. S. Army spent four weeks testing new Oshkosh FMTV A2 trucks designed to replace older vehicles from the FMTV family. The trials took place at Fort Bliss in Texas.
