The heavy nuclear-powered missile cruiser Admiral Nakhimov is approaching the final stage of trials following an extensive modernization and may soon rejoin the Russian Navy. Chinese media analysts have highlighted the strategic significance of this development.
According to the reports, the modernization of the cruiser, originally built during the Soviet era, has taken several years and involved a comprehensive overhaul of its systems despite challenges such as Western sanctions. After the upgrades, the Admiral Nakhimov is considered one of the most heavily armed surface vessels in the Russian fleet.
The cruiser now carries advanced weaponry, including hypersonic anti-ship missiles Zircon, cruise missiles Kalibr and Oniks, as well as the Pantsir-M missile-artillery system and additional combat equipment. Experts note that these upgrades significantly expand the vessel’s capabilities, allowing it to strike targets at long ranges, defend itself against threats, and perform a wide range of combat missions. Analysts have emphasized that the cruiser’s return strengthens Russia’s ability to conduct sustained operations in distant oceanic regions.
The vessel’s enhanced firepower and versatility make it a formidable presence, potentially posing serious challenges to U.S. carrier groups. On June 1, the Northern Fleet announced that the Admiral Nakhimov has entered the final phase of trials after modernization. Last August, the cruiser conducted its first sea trials in the White Sea in 28 years.
