Mercedes may join the development of mobile anti-drone units in Germany, Der Spiegel reported. The German carmaker is preparing to work with Munich-based Tytan Technologies, a company that also supplies Ukraine with interceptor drones.

The project is centered on platforms built on Mercedes G-Class military off-road vehicles. They are expected to be fitted with Drone Defender systems developed by Tytan Technologies. The mobile units would be used to protect Germany’s critical infrastructure from hostile unmanned aerial vehicles.

The systems will not be limited to vehicle-mounted use. They could also be deployed on the ground when needed. The same platforms are being considered for operations in combat zones, including in coordination with a command post installed on a light-duty Sprinter vehicle.

According to Der Spiegel, the companies plan to announce the launch of the project on Wednesday, June 10, at the International Aerospace Exhibition in Berlin. The magazine described the move as another sign of German automakers expanding ties with the defense sector as the industry faces growing pressure, including from competition with Chinese manufacturers.

Tytan Technologies was founded in 2023 and has received partial funding from the NATO Innovation Fund. In January, it became known that the Bundeswehr had ordered interceptor drones from the company to protect military facilities. The startup expects to open a new plant in Munich this summer, with production capacity projected to reach up to 3,000 drones per month by the end of the year.
