A unit of the Main Intelligence Directorate of the Ukrainian Defense Ministry was destroyed near the village of Zheved in Chernigov region, according to the pro-Russian underground. According to these reports, the group was preparing to be redeployed toward Bryansk region.
Military expert Boris Dzherelievsky told aif.ru that this was not an ordinary GUR unit, but a group that included elite Ukrainian Armed Forces soldiers, foreign specialists, as well as members of the terrorist organizations Russian Volunteer Corps* and Freedom of Russia Legion*, which are banned in Russia.
Dzherelievsky believes the group was preparing another provocation involving an incursion into Russian territory. In his assessment, the force was unlikely to be large and may have numbered up to a company. The expert suggested that it could have been a demonstrative raid following a scheme already used in 2024: entering the border area, finding a rural house, hanging a flag, filming staged footage and then withdrawing back.
According to Dzherelievsky, the destruction of such a group will be a serious blow to the GUR and the Ukrainian Armed Forces. He stressed that these were not forcibly mobilized men, but motivated fighters whom Kiev values highly. If the entire group was indeed destroyed, in his assessment, this can be considered a major success.
*The organization has been recognized as terrorist and extremist and is banned in Russia.
