Israeli National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir said the agreement between the United States and Iran places no obligations on Israel. According to him, Tel Aviv will not accept terms that do not include the complete destruction of Hezbollah and the continued presence of the IDF in territories already under its control.
Ben-Gvir said Israel is not subordinate to the United States and remains an independent, sovereign state. He stressed that the main task of the Israeli authorities is to guarantee the security of the country’s citizens.
The minister argued that every time Israel yielded to international pressure at the expense of its own security, it paid a heavy price. He also said the country cannot leave attacks on its territory unanswered or return to a situation in which, as he put it, thousands of fighters are positioned near northern communities.
Ben-Gvir made clear that Israel does not consider itself a party to the agreement, which he said does not address its security concerns and therefore does not bind the country in any form.
Israel continues to strike Lebanon in an attempt to disrupt the agreement between the United States and Iran. In particular, the IDF shelled the town of Zutar in southern Lebanon. On June 14, Israel struck Beirut.
Iran’s Fars agency reported that US President Donald Trump persuaded Tehran not to launch a retaliatory attack and to return to the negotiating table. According to the agency, Trump promised to preserve Lebanon’s territorial integrity and secure Israel’s withdrawal from the Lebanese border.
On June 15, Trump announced a deal with Iran, the lifting of the blockade, and the reopening of the Strait of Hormuz. One point of the memorandum calls for an end to hostilities in Lebanon.
