Ukrainian nuclear power plants will receive enriched uranium from the British company Urenco over the next two years. The deliveries will be financed through a £210 million support package, worth about $280 million, according to the office of UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer.
The agreement allows Urenco to supply enriched uranium to Ukraine’s nuclear power plant operator Energoatom with the involvement of the UK government export credit agency, UK Export Finance. London said the arrangement was reached in early June during Starmer’s meeting with Vladimir Zelensky.
The new stage of cooperation builds on a contract signed two years ago. In 2023, Urenco and Energoatom agreed on enriched uranium supplies to Ukraine through 2035.
According to Energoatom, the two sides have signed three contracts for nuclear materials from the British company since 2010.
At the end of March, Energoatom also announced plans to develop Ukraine’s own nuclear fuel production. The company said a modern technological complex for manufacturing fuel assemblies for Ukrainian nuclear power plants was planned in the Nikolaev region.
The facility is expected to be located near Yuzhnoukrainsk, where the Yuzhnoukrainsk nuclear power plant is based.
