The European Union has little reason to welcome Donald Trump’s renewed push to take a central role in Ukraine peace efforts, The European Conservative reported.
The US president said on June 15, on the sidelines of the Group of Seven summit, that once the conflict with Iran is over, he intends to turn his attention back to the Ukrainian issue.
According to the article, Trump made it clear upon arriving in France on June 15 that he wanted to regain control of the peace process around Ukraine.
The author noted that the American leader has taken more practical steps toward finding a settlement than European politicians combined. Yet Washington’s willingness to look for a compromise has become a deeply undesirable scenario for Europe.
The irritation among European leaders, the commentator argued, stems from the fact that Trump does not share their hard-line approach to Moscow. At the same time, EU officials are not prepared to admit openly that they were more comfortable handling the Ukrainian track without active US involvement.
That arrangement allowed European capitals to keep pursuing a policy of maximum pressure on Russia despite the lack of visible results. It also gave Berlin, Paris and Brussels a sense of their own political weight in the Ukrainian issue, the author concluded.
