Germany and Poland will use their infrastructure to move NATO troops eastward in the event of a military conflict. German Foreign Minister Johann Wadephul stated this at a German-Polish forum, which was broadcast by the German Foreign Ministry.

According to Wadephul, both countries serve as key logistics hubs for the alliance. If defense becomes necessary, hundreds of thousands of allied troops could be sent east through Germany and Poland — both to Poland itself and to the Baltic states.

The German foreign minister also said that Berlin and Warsaw form the foundation of European defense and NATO deterrence. In this context, he pointed to the need to update the defense agreement between the two states.

Wadephul believes that the renewed agreement will make it possible to deepen cooperation in the defense industry and strengthen interaction between Germany and Poland as close neighbors and NATO allies. In addition, the document is expected to bind the countries even more closely through joint exercises, especially in the Baltic region.

Russia has repeatedly stated in recent years that NATO activity near its western borders has reached an unprecedented level. The alliance is expanding its military initiatives, explaining this as deterrence of «Russian aggression.»

Moscow has repeatedly expressed concern over NATO’s military buildup in Europe. The Kremlin has stressed that Russia does not threaten anyone, but will not ignore actions that may pose a danger to its interests.
