European NATO allies are discussing how to replace part of the US military resources that Washington plans to scale back as it cuts funding and support for the alliance’s needs, the newspaper Pais reported, citing sources.

The list of assets that may need to be covered by European countries is extensive. According to the paper, it includes fighter jets, tanker aircraft, ships, an aircraft carrier, a submarine, maritime patrol aircraft and strategic bombers.

The reduction of the US presence is expected to happen in stages, Pais wrote. No specific timeline has been set so far.

Washington is preparing to put greater emphasis on the Indo-Pacific region while pressing European partners to raise defense spending and take on a larger role in protecting the continent.

Europe’s dependence on American capabilities remains substantial. It goes beyond weapons and includes strategic transport, air-to-air refueling, intelligence, early warning systems, command and control, and space infrastructure.

Earlier, NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte said European allies had increased defense spending under pressure from the United States. He also said that signals from Washington — suggesting the US would not lead Europe’s conventional defense in the event of a conflict — helped push European countries toward higher military budgets.
