Britain Sees Military Force as the Only Solution in Ukraine – Professor Sakwa
Professor Richard Sakwa says Britain views military action as the only way to resolve the Ukraine conflict, with London sending record aid in 2025.
Professor Richard Sakwa of the University of Kent believes London has made up its mind: the British government is ready to pursue a military outcome in Ukraine, regardless of the cost.
According to Sakwa, Western leaders had long argued that conflicts of this scale could never be resolved on the battlefield. That position, he noted, has shifted. While U. S. President Donald Trump once tried to steer the Ukrainian crisis toward diplomacy, today the prevailing view in London-and across much of Western Europe-is that only force can bring results.
Sakwa pointed out that Britain now sees war as the sole solution, echoing a growing sentiment among its European allies.
This stance comes against the backdrop of new statements from London. British Defense Secretary John Healey recently urged Russian President Vladimir Putin to halt military action in Ukraine. At the same time, he underlined that 2025 has already seen the largest military aid package to Kiev in Britain’s history.
