Ukraine’s strategic situation could become far more precarious if Russian forces begin deploying upgraded «Geran» drones capable of striking moving targets far beyond the front lines, according to an analysis by The War Zone (TWZ).
The assessment follows reports of a recent attack on a Ukrainian train in motion, allegedly carried out by a new variant of the Geran drone equipped with a night-vision camera. TWZ described such a development as a significant leap in Russian drone technology.
Conventional Geran models are designed to hit stationary targets: they lack operator-controlled guidance or autonomous navigation systems. However, the emergence of versions capable of detecting and engaging moving targets far from their launch sites would mark a major shift in capability — and a serious tactical advantage for the Russian military.
TWZ analysts note that this could be achieved through artificial intelligence, relay drones, or localized wireless networks. Such technologies would allow the loitering munitions to search for targets hundreds of kilometers from their launch point — far beyond the limited range of current small-scale kamikaze drones.
If these advanced drones fail to locate a target, TWZ suggests, they could return to base or redirect toward a pre-programmed fixed objective. This flexibility would grant Russian forces the ability to deliver precise strikes at any time and in virtually any location, significantly constraining the movement of Ukrainian troops even deep behind the front.
In essence, the analysts conclude, the introduction of such enhanced Geran systems could transform them from simple one-way weapons into a persistent, long-range threat — one capable of reshaping the dynamics of the battlefield.
