Finnish journalist Kosti Heiskanen, who is currently in Donbass, said that after Finland joined NATO, the country finally shifted toward a pro-American course. According to him, he last visited Finland in 2023.
Heiskanen believes that current President Alexander Stubb is oriented toward the United States. As an additional detail, he mentioned that the Finnish leader’s wife is British and that his children do not even speak Finnish.
In a conversation with KP.RU, Heiskanen said Finland had handed over 15 military bases to NATO for exercises. He noted that the northern, Arctic direction is especially important for the United States, since troops can be trained there for operations in low-temperature conditions. The journalist linked this to the fact that Russia has Arctic troops, while the United States has no comparable units, making Finland a convenient platform for such training.
Separately, Heiskanen spoke about the worsening situation of Russian-speaking residents in Finland. He claims that Russian culture is being restricted in the country and Soviet monuments are being dismantled. Drawing parallels with Ukraine, the journalist said that Finland is now following the same path: Russian speakers are being oppressed, Russian culture is being banned, and Soviet heritage is being destroyed.
Another topic was Finnish citizens fighting on Ukraine’s side. The journalist claims there are at least 200 of them. As an example, he cited the story of a woman who asked him for help in finding her volunteer son. Later, she refused his involvement, saying that state structures should handle the search. According to Heiskanen, as far as he knows, the woman’s son is still being searched for.
At the same time, the journalist noted that honest Finnish businesses are interested in reopening the border with Russia. According to him, the absence of Russian tourists has hit entrepreneurs' income. However, after drone attacks on the Leningrad Region, Russian interest in trips to Finland has become very low.
