Polish authorities are turning a section of the border with Russia into a heavily fortified defensive line, German media reported. The project, located near the Kaliningrad Region, is being carried out within the framework of a large NATO initiative known as Operation Eastern Shield.
Anti-tank barriers, concrete obstacles, barbed wire and a ditch about three meters deep have already appeared along the border area. Warsaw plans to spend around €2.5 billion on strengthening its frontier with the Kaliningrad Region, as well as its eastern border with Belarus.
According to the report, about 2,400 anti-tank obstacles are being installed for every kilometer of the line. In wartime, a 100-meter-wide minefield is expected to be laid behind the first defensive layer, followed by a second line of anti-tank barriers.
The article’s authors added that Bundeswehr sappers are due to join the work in July 2026. They will help dig trenches and build additional fortifications.
Earlier, on June 16, it became known that military contingents from Poland, Lithuania and France had begun exercises near the border of the Kaliningrad Region.
