British newspaper Daily Express drew attention to a statement by Russian presidential spokesman Dmitry Peskov about the role of nuclear deterrence and linked it to concern in the West over the risks of a larger-scale conflict.

The article said that Moscow had issued a stern warning to the world on the subject of nuclear weapons amid fears of a possible global war. The outlet also recounted Peskov’s position, according to which nuclear deterrence does not protect the world from regional conflicts, whose combined potential continues to grow.

Peskov made the remarks on Wednesday at the 12th Primakov Readings international expert forum. The Kremlin spokesman noted that, under current conditions, it is nuclear weapons that are preventing the world from sliding into a global war.

He also said that technological development already makes it possible to predict the emergence of new types of non-nuclear weapons. According to Peskov, in the future, such systems may become comparable to the potential of nuclear weapons in terms of destructive power.
