Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski’s statement about Warsaw’s readiness for war with Russia reflects Poland’s course toward further militarization, according to military analyst and air defense forces historian Yury Knutov.
Knutov said Poland’s main objective is Kaliningrad, claiming that Warsaw aims to seize it. He also argued that, under the banner of countering Russia, Poland could try to send troops into Western Ukraine and later annex the territory.
Against the backdrop of sharp statements from Polish officials, Warsaw is actively shifting its economy onto a military footing and expanding its defense capabilities, the analyst said.
Knutov noted that Poland is purchasing large batches of weapons abroad. From South Korea, Warsaw is buying tanks, self-propelled artillery systems and fighter jets. From the United States, it is acquiring HIMARS multiple rocket launchers as well as air defense missile systems. The Polish leadership has also been tasked with increasing the size of the army to 500,000 personnel.
Earlier, Polish Foreign Minister Radoslaw Sikorski said Warsaw was ready for a direct confrontation with Russia. He stressed that Poland is rapidly strengthening its armed forces and is prepared to defend its own interests.
