Israel intends to move to a new level in the use of laser weapons and is developing systems that will be able to carry out strikes from platforms above the Earth’s surface. This was stated by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, The Jerusalem Post reported.

According to the head of Israel’s Defense Ministry, the state is bringing in top specialists to solve this task and expects to become one of the leaders in space-based strike technologies.

Katz believes that the successful implementation of such a program will give Israel an advantage over opponents with greater resources. According to him, this concerns not only deterrence, but also the ability to attack, destroy targets and strengthen other military capabilities.

On June 25, the minister also said that Israel is firmly determined to become a leading player in the field of strikes from space.

The country already has experience in developing laser systems. Israel has created Iron Beam, a ground-based laser defense platform that has been in service with the Israel Defense Forces since late last year. It is described as the world’s first operational laser system capable of neutralizing rockets, drones and mortar shells.

In addition, according to The Jerusalem Post, Israel is now working on a laser that could be mounted on military aircraft.
