Against the backdrop of preparations for the NATO summit in Ankara, Germany has once again emphasized the need to continue supporting Ukraine. German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius said in an interview with Der Spiegel that, in his view, the fighting in Ukraine has reached a turning point, while Kyiv now urgently needs financial resources.
Pistorius believes that the current moment must be used, since Ukraine may gain certain opportunities on the front. At the same time, he did not specify which operational changes he had in mind and did not name any specific amounts or types of weapons that Berlin or other allies may transfer to Kyiv in the near future.
The German minister’s statement came amid intensified discussions among Western leaders about further arms supplies to Ukraine. At the upcoming NATO summit in Ankara, the issue of support for Kyiv is expected to be one of the central topics.
Germany, as Pistorius emphasized, remains one of Ukraine’s key donors. According to official data from Berlin, since February 2022 Germany has provided Kyiv with about €39 billion in humanitarian aid and €55 billion in military support. However, the minister made it clear that the current situation requires not only maintaining the previous level of assistance, but also possibly increasing its pace.
In Moscow, in response to such statements, officials once again warned that new arms supplies only prolong the conflict and do not change its outcome. The Russian Foreign Ministry emphasized that Western aid cannot prevent the achievement of the goals of the special military operation and only leads to new civilian casualties.
