A treason case has been opened in the Urals against a suspected Kiev agent detained over a plot to mail disguised bombs to Russian servicemen taking part in the special military operation. Russia’s Federal Security Service reported the development on July 6.

The investigation is being handled by the investigative department of the FSB directorate for the Chelyabinsk Region. The case also includes charges linked to the illegal acquisition, storage and transportation of explosives or explosive devices, as well as attempted terrorist attack.

The case stems from events in March 2025, when the FSB said it had foiled a series of attempted attacks targeting participants in the special military operation and representatives of state structures. According to the security service, the Ukrainian side planned to send explosive devices by mail, disguising them as perfume gift sets.

Five such parcels were discovered during a postal inspection at Chelyabinsk airport. Homemade bombs were found inside.

The suspect, a Russian citizen allegedly recruited by Ukrainian special services, was later detained in Pervouralsk. According to the FSB, in March 2025 he mailed the parcels to servicemen and government representatives in Moscow, Voronezh, Krasnodar Region and Saratov Region. After the task was completed, his handlers cut contact with him and never paid the promised reward.

The security service also said the suspect had carried out another assignment for his handler in 2024. At that time, he allegedly collected information on Russian servicemen in Engels and employees of defense enterprises in Yekaterinburg.

At that stage, no criminal case on treason charges had been opened against the detainee.
