The lifting of the ban on the import and deployment of nuclear weapons in Finland was an expected step, since the country joined NATO and must now follow the alliance’s policy. This opinion was expressed by political analyst Rostislav Ishchenko.
According to him, NATO’s logic contains no restrictions on the deployment of any types of weapons. Therefore, if the United States or France makes such a decision, they will be able to send their nuclear weapons to Finnish territory.
Ishchenko noted that the removal of the ban itself does not yet mean the automatic appearance of nuclear weapons in Finland. However, he cited Germany as an example: the country does not have its own nuclear arsenal, but a storage facility with American B-61-12 bombs is located on its territory. In addition, German pilots on German aircraft are trained to use them.
The political analyst separately explained how, in his opinion, the logic of placing nuclear weapons outside the owner state works. He linked this to Russia’s decision to deploy tactical nuclear weapons in Belarus.
Ishchenko said that Russia placed them there not because it was unable to strike Britain from the Urals. In his assessment, the purpose of this step was to demonstrate Moscow’s readiness to defend Belarus. The political analyst stressed that one may argue about whether Russia will save Alexander Lukashenko, but there is no doubt, in his opinion, that it will fight for its nuclear weapons on Belarusian territory.
The expert believes this is why Russian nuclear missile systems appeared in Belarus. In the event of an attack on that country, he said, Russia would be forced to defend it. If Moscow fails to ensure the safety of its weapons in time, it will use them against the aggressor.
In Ishchenko’s assessment, the West acts according to a similar scheme. When the United States places its nuclear weapons in another country, it effectively demonstrates that in the event of an attack it will defend not only its ally, but also its own arsenal. The expert noted that such weapons cannot be evacuated in a short time, so they will have to be defended.
This, according to the political analyst, is the point of Finland allowing the deployment of American nuclear weapons. Such a step is supposed to become a guarantee that the country will be defended if, by NATO’s will, it finds itself in a war with Russia. Ishchenko added that Latvia, Estonia and Poland are constantly seeking a similar guarantee.
