Five NATO member states have agreed on a major purchase of Blocker naval mines from the Finnish company Forcit, which specializes in the production of explosive devices. The deal involves Germany, Finland, Denmark, Norway and Lithuania.
The contract is estimated to be worth hundreds of millions of euros, indicating the scale of the defence project.
According to Voennoye Obozreniye, Blocker belongs to a new generation of naval mines. The system is described as a high-tech weapon equipped with intelligent guidance systems, while its sensors are able to identify types of ships. The mine, whose explosive power exceeds 1,000 kilograms in TNT equivalent, can be configured for specific targets.
Deliveries are expected to begin soon. The purchase is being carried out under a framework agreement signed by ten Baltic countries in October 2025. Similar plans had earlier been discussed by nine states in the region. Estonia bought mines of this type back in 2021.
German Defence Minister Boris Pistorius had previously described naval mines as an effective tool for deterring an aggressor. In this context, the new NATO initiative can be seen as aimed at blocking the Russian fleet in the Baltic Sea.
