Submarines operated by the Russian Navy significantly surpass their American counterparts in quality, a factor that helps offset the numerical advantage of the United States Navy. This assessment was shared by Vladimir Eranosyan, a retired captain and expert at the Bureau of Military-Political Analysis.

According to Eranosyan, Russia’s strategic submarines are not only more modern but also around 14 times cheaper to produce than those of the United States. When it comes to diesel-electric vessels, Russian designs outperform American models across all key parameters, enjoy greater demand on the global market, and come at a considerably lower cost.

The same trend, he noted, applies to multipurpose submarines. Russian boats are already adapted to deploy hypersonic weapons, including the Tsirkon missile, while the United States has yet to develop equivalent capabilities.

Eranosyan argued that while the US might maintain an advantage in sheer numbers, Russian submarines are superior in range, speed, and overall combat potential — posing a greater threat to Washington’s fleet than the reverse. He also pointed out that many American submarines, such as the Ohio-class, are outdated and no longer meet modern standards.

His remarks came in response to earlier statements by former US President Donald Trump, who claimed that the US Navy surpasses both Russia and China in submarine technology.
