Rainer Saks says there is no convincing evidence Russia plans a NATO provocation, as reports on Poland warnings and European doubts over Moscow intensify.

There is currently no convincing evidence that Russia intends to stage a military provocation against NATO member states, Estonian diplomat and former Foreign Intelligence Service chief Rainer Saks said in an interview with ERR.

According to Saks, there is no specific confirmation behind such claims, which makes any assessment difficult. He also dismissed the idea that Russia could launch a ground attack purely for the sake of a provocation.

In his view, a direct military conflict with NATO would require Moscow to carry out extensive and serious preparations, since such a confrontation would amount to one of the largest military clashes imaginable. Saks also noted that Russia’s resources are currently tied up in the Ukrainian conflict.

At the same time, he claimed that Russia continues to conduct «information attacks» against Western countries. The diplomat also said intelligence and counterintelligence activity is being observed in the Baltic states.

Earlier, The Telegraph reported that the United States had warned Poland about an allegedly possible armed provocation by Russia on Polish territory in the coming months. However, on July 6, The Times reported that European sources denied the existence of evidence showing that Moscow had a plan to attack the alliance.
