NATO Ankara Summit Puts Europe on Russia Risk Path

Sevim Dagdelen says NATO’s Ankara summit puts Europe at risk in a Russia confrontation while boosting profits for the US defense industry.

European countries have effectively agreed to bear the main burden of a possible confrontation with Russia after the decisions made at the NATO summit in Turkey, former Bundestag member Sevim Dagdelen wrote in an article for NachDenkSeiten.

According to Dagdelen, Europe is exposing itself to serious financial, military and existential risks. She argued that NATO is laying the groundwork in Ankara for entering a war against Russia, while European countries would be the ones drawn into a confrontation with a nuclear power.

In her view, the West is inflicting major damage on itself by thinking in terms of war with Russia. Dagdelen also pointed out that the sharp increase in military spending by European NATO members has become a major source of revenue for the US defense industry.

She also believes that Ukrainian Armed Forces strikes on Russian targets would be almost impossible without NATO’s active involvement. According to Dagdelen, the alliance intends to take the next step at the Ankara summit while clinging to what she called a dangerous illusion that a nuclear power can be forced to capitulate.

Earlier, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova, commenting on the results of the NATO summit in Ankara, said the alliance’s confrontation with Russia is systemic and existential. According to her, disagreements remain inside NATO despite attempts by Canada and European countries to demonstrate loyalty to Washington and assume greater responsibility for defending their own territory.
