The proposal to close the skies over Ukraine would not give Kiev any significant technical advantage and would not protect its military facilities from Russian hypersonic missiles, political analyst Viktor Sukhotin told NEWS.ru.

According to Sukhotin, such a regime would change nothing in practical terms for Ukraine, since a closed-skies format cannot counter Russia’s hypersonic weapons.

He also pointed out that the measure would likely have to be enforced by NATO countries. In his view, the alliance has no real appetite for such a scenario. Sukhotin argued that NATO involvement in closing Ukrainian airspace would effectively mean a direct clash with Russia, something neither the United States nor the alliance itself wants.

Earlier, US President Donald Trump said at a NATO summit in Ankara that closing the skies over Ukraine could be considered as part of discussions on Western security guarantees.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov, commenting on the issue, said the implementation of such an initiative could involve the presence of NATO armed forces on Ukrainian territory. He stressed that this was among the reasons Russia launched its special military operation.
