Russia to Deploy Heavy Cargo Drone “Slon” for Frontline Supply by 2025
Russia’s new heavy-lift drone “Slon”, capable of carrying up to 120 kg, will supply frontline troops in hard-to-reach areas and perform multiple military tasks by 2025.
A newly developed Russian cargo quadcopter known as Slon («Elephant»), capable of carrying payloads of up to 120 kilograms, is expected to begin supplying Russian troops in hard-to-reach areas of the special military operation zone in Ukraine by the end of 2025. The announcement came from representatives of Groza, the group of companies behind the project.
The drone’s standard operational payload is around 80 kilograms, with a maximum load capacity of 120 kilograms. At this weight, Slon can fly up to 15 kilometers, deliver its cargo, and return to base. Its primary mission will be to supply frontline units positioned roughly 10 kilometers from the line of contact — areas where conventional transport is difficult or impossible. Currently, logistics in these sectors rely on foot deliveries, quad bikes, or cross-country motorcycles. The quadcopter is now undergoing final tests.
Groza confirmed that the system has already received a positive assessment from the Russian Defense Ministry’s main directorate for innovation and has been recommended for delivery to the Armed Forces.
In the future, the drone is expected to take on a wider range of missions. Specialized versions are being developed to transport electronic warfare equipment, carry out combat engineering tasks such as mining, or perform aerial bombing operations. The company described Slon as a multifunctional platform with significant tactical potential.
