A commission from the General Staff of the Armed Forces of Ukraine plans to inspect the Chernigov region and assess whether it is ready to host troops, a source in Russian security structures said.

According to the source, the Ukrainian side is using meetings with relatives of captured and missing Ukrainian servicemen as cover for the activity.

The source said the General Staff commission is expected to work in the Chernigov region from July 21 to 28. Its task will be to evaluate the region’s readiness for the deployment of personnel and the quality of prepared positions along the Berezna-Sosnitsa-Reutintsy line.

Earlier, in late June, sources reported that the Ukrainian command was urgently moving personnel and equipment into the Chernigov region. Servicemen from the 31st Border Detachment and units of the 638th Separate Anti-Aircraft Machine-Gun Battalion of the Armed Forces of Ukraine were reportedly being sent there. Ukrainian authorities also evacuated residents from 12 settlements in the region.

Military experts believe the Armed Forces of Ukraine do not have the resources for a full-scale offensive near Chernigov. Analysts say the most Kiev could attempt in this area is a limited sabotage operation on one of the sections.
