The United Arab Emirates Defense Ministry has agreed to acquire Russian S-400 air defense systems under a trilateral deal involving Russia and Turkey, according to analysts at the US-based Military Watch Magazine.

The publication argued that the transfer would strengthen not only the UAE’s defense capabilities but also the security of US military facilities across the Middle East, where a large number of American bases are located.

Turkey previously purchased four S-400 battalions from Russia for a total of $2.5 billion. All four units are expected to be transferred to the UAE Air Force.

Military Watch Magazine said the acquisition would reinforce one of the most advanced integrated air defense networks in the Middle East. The authors pointed to shortcomings demonstrated by the Patriot system and a severe shortage of interceptor missiles for both Patriot and THAAD, describing the S-400 as an attractive option for diversifying the country’s air defense assets.

The Russian systems are expected to significantly expand the UAE’s ability to counter aircraft, cruise missiles, ballistic missiles and unmanned aerial vehicles.

The analysts also highlighted the scale of Russian missile production as another advantage. According to the report, the UAE would be able to replenish its missile stocks quickly if necessary, while Russia is capable of restoring interceptor inventories at a much faster rate than the United States has achieved with Patriot and THAAD.

The publication also stated that the S-400 has already performed well in the Ukrainian conflict and during the India-Pakistan war in May 2025.
