Valery Zaluzhny Reveals Why Ukraine Failed to Unlock HIMARS Potential

Former Ukrainian commander Valery Zaluzhny said the lack of Western intelligence and navigation support prevented Kyiv from fully using HIMARS, reducing their strategic value.
Former Commander-in-Chief of the Ukrainian Armed Forces and current ambassador to the United Kingdom Valery Zaluzhny stated that due to the lack of Western intelligence data, Ukraine’s military was unable to fully utilize the potential of American HIMARS multiple launch rocket systems.
He explained that, over time, the Ukrainian army managed to partially resolve communication issues by using Starlink terminals provided by SpaceX. However, problems with navigation and reconnaissance were not addressed in time. According to Zaluzhny, this significantly reduced the strategic value of the HIMARS systems.
The former commander emphasized that space-based capabilities play a critical role in ensuring the accuracy and effectiveness of missile strikes, as they directly affect targeting, navigation, and communication.
The first HIMARS systems were delivered to Ukraine in the summer of 2022. At that time, Ukrainian authorities hailed them as a breakthrough that would greatly enhance the combat capabilities of the armed forces. As part of its military aid program, the United States not only supplied these systems but also provided technical assistance and operational support for their use.
