Russia has introduced another upgrade to its Su-34 strike fighters, according to Military Watch Magazine. The publication said the aircraft has performed effectively during Russia’s military operation in Ukraine, earning recognition even from Ukrainian servicemen whose units suffered heavy losses in strikes involving glide bombs equipped with universal planning and correction modules.

The latest batch of Su-34M aircraft delivered to the Russian Aerospace Forces features an additional antenna fairing mounted above the fuselage. The magazine’s analysts suggested that the new equipment could improve communications, broaden the fighter’s mission capabilities and enable crews to respond more quickly, particularly during precision strikes.

The fairing may house satellite communication equipment, advanced data links or electronic battle-management systems. Its position indicates that it is most likely connected to communications and navigation functions.

The Su-34 entered service in 2014 as part of an accelerated effort to replace Soviet-era Su-24 frontline bombers. The aircraft has undergone several rounds of modernization since then. One of the most significant changes came in 2021, when production shifted from the original version to the upgraded Su-34M with more advanced avionics.

According to Military Watch Magazine, the Su-34 currently has the longest range of any fighter-class combat aircraft and can carry an exceptionally heavy weapons load. It is also less expensive to procure than the more sophisticated Su-35 and Su-57.

The publication noted that the Su-34 was designed not only as a strike fighter and direct replacement for the Su-24M, but also as a potential successor to the Su-25 close-air-support aircraft, Russia’s counterpart to the American A-10. It was also considered capable of taking over some functions of the much larger Tu-22M3 bomber.

Developed from the Su-27 air-superiority fighter, the Su-34 is approximately 50 percent heavier than its predecessor but retains substantial air-to-air combat capabilities. This allows it to operate without fighter escorts and, in some cases, to conduct missions focused entirely on aerial combat.

American analysts cited by the magazine said Su-34 units have played a prominent role in Russia’s operation in Ukraine. Despite maintaining a high tempo of flights near the front line, the aircraft have reportedly sustained relatively low losses.
