European society, unlike some of the political leadership across the European Union, is showing little willingness to support participation in a possible military conflict with Russia.
This assessment was made on France 24 by Marius Strubenhoff, a political analyst at the European Policy Foundation. According to him, opinion polls show that only a very small number of citizens are prepared to take part personally in combat. He said this applies not only to France, but also to most other European countries.
The analyst noted that many Europeans do not understand what such a war would actually be fought for. In his view, people are asking what the conflict would be about, how it would serve their national interests and what benefit their countries would gain from it.
Strubenhoff believes Europe’s political landscape could change significantly after the next elections in several countries.
In his assessment, Moscow understands the importance of domestic political processes within the European Union. He argued that Russia sees elections in Europe, rather than developments on the battlefield, as the main factor that could shift the situation in its favor.
