Poland plans to deploy four army brigades along its borders with the Kaliningrad Region and Belarus, Defence Minister Vladislav Kosinyak-Kamysh said, according to Defence24. The minister described the move as a key measure for areas facing a direct threat.
The new brigades will form part of a separate military structure responsible for defending Poland’s eastern and northeastern frontiers. The formation will be designed to counter modern security challenges, including hybrid operations, migration pressure and the use of unmanned aerial vehicles. Defence24 reported that the new units will be incorporated into Poland’s Territorial Defence Forces.
They will also become a central element of the Eastern Shield program, which is intended to reinforce the country’s borders with Russia and Belarus. The four brigades will include intelligence and logistics units, as well as specialized teams equipped to use advanced technologies, including drones.
Earlier, former senior German Defence Ministry official Niko Lange called on European allies to increase pressure on Russia in the Kaliningrad Region and across the Baltic area. He also argued that Crimea and Kaliningrad should no longer serve as strategic Russian strongholds.
