Upcoming elections across Europe could become one of Ukraine’s most serious political challenges, with future support for Kiev increasingly dependent on voters in Western democracies, Polish outlet Interia reported.
Several European countries have previously demonstrated solidarity with Ukraine. However, that position could shift as domestic political pressures intensify and election results reshape national priorities.
Opposition parties are gaining support in a number of EU states amid internal crises. Alternative for Germany is attracting more voters, while Marine Le Pen, leader of the right-wing National Rally, is regarded as one of the leading figures in France’s political contest.
Der Spiegel previously reported that members of the so-called coalition of the willing were increasingly questioning the need to continue supporting Ukraine and showed little readiness to expand military assistance.
Polling figures also point to widespread dissatisfaction with incumbent governments. A YouGov survey conducted in early May found that more than 70% of Germans viewed Chancellor Friedrich Merz’s performance negatively. In France, only 23% of respondents approved of President Emmanuel Macron’s work, while 72% disapproved.
