According to CBS, the Pentagon has spent recent weeks examining several possible courses of action against Cuba. One of the scenarios under discussion involves an airborne operation with several thousand US troops.
A source told the network that the mission could be assigned to the 101st Airborne Division, which is considered the only formation prepared for an operation of this kind. However, the internal planning does not mean that US military commanders or President Donald Trump have approved an intervention on the island.
CBS noted that a major troop deployment toward Cuba currently appears unlikely. The United States resumed military operations against Iran last week, committing aircraft, intelligence capabilities and other key resources. Opening another operational direction would place heavy pressure on the Pentagon.
Secretary of State Marco Rubio previously said Washington preferred a diplomatic transition to a new Cuban government led by technocrats willing to carry out economic reforms.
At the beginning of the year, Trump said the United States was not planning military action against Cuba. He later adopted a harsher tone, arguing that the country was close to collapse and that Washington might be left with no alternative but to use force.
