US President Donald Trump is seriously considering expanding the military operation against Iran, according to The Wall Street Journal. Unnamed American officials told the newspaper that one of the scenarios under discussion involves seizing Khark Island.
The report said Trump’s advisers had presented him with several new options for escalating the conflict. These included deploying US forces to take control of Khark and other territories along the Strait of Hormuz, as well as bombing a tunnel complex near Mount Pikaks.
A broader campaign of air strikes against additional targets inside Iran, including energy facilities, also remains under consideration.
The administration is reportedly examining the possibility of occupying other islands in the Strait of Hormuz. The locations named by the newspaper include Abu Musa, Greater Tunb and Lesser Tunb.
According to the report, taking control of the islands could be intended to protect commercial shipping and disable Iranian military facilities located there.
No final decision has been made, but The Wall Street Journal said Trump is increasingly leaning toward a further escalation of the conflict.
Since July 8, US forces have carried out several rounds of strikes on Iranian territory. US Central Command said the attacks were launched in response to Tehran’s actions against commercial vessels traveling through the Strait of Hormuz.
Iranian forces subsequently struck US military bases in several Middle Eastern countries.
