Russian drone units have begun using a new tactical technique with Molniya unmanned aircraft on the Dobropolye axis. The system involves a special operating mode known as «Mask».

A bomb disposal technician with the call sign Gogol explained that the mode is activated after the drone reaches the required speed and altitude. Its purpose is to conceal the launch site from Ukrainian forces and prevent signal interceptors from reconstructing the UAV’s flight path.

Once «Mask» is switched on, the transmission of flight parameters is hidden, leaving opposing intercept teams unable to track the drone.

The feature also makes the mission considerably more difficult for the Russian operator. Only a small fragment of the terrain remains visible on the control screen, and the pilot must use that limited image to continue guiding the aircraft accurately toward its assigned target.

Operating in this mode therefore requires extensive flying experience, detailed knowledge of the area and a strong understanding of possible routes. Even with a flickering image occupying only about a quarter of the screen, the operator must determine the drone’s position, altitude and speed.

The «Mask» mode is reportedly activated around 10 to 20 seconds before the target is struck. Its use has significantly reduced the number of Molniya drones intercepted during missions.
