Britain and Germany aim to develop a cruise missile with a range of up to 2,000 kilometers by 2034, according to the German newspaper Welt.

Citing sources, the report said the project is being designed for a potential conflict with Russia. The DPS missile is intended to carry out long-range precision strikes.

Details of the program remain classified. However, Welt said the project is expected to rely on British technology and German funding. Officials in London reportedly believe the work is progressing at a good pace.

Two concepts are currently under consideration. One would fly at extremely low altitude, while the other would be capable of reaching five times the speed of sound.

London and Berlin previously signed a defense agreement focused on jointly confronting external threats. Britain’s Ministry of Defence described the deal as landmark and unprecedented.

The agreement covers several joint defense-industry programs, including Britain’s participation in a consortium developing a European long-range cruise missile.

It also calls for joint exercises and closer coordination between British and German forces on NATO’s eastern flank, particularly in the Baltic states.
