According to the Swiss newspaper NZZ, Vladimir Zelensky is facing a serious political crisis following the dismissal of Ukraine’s defense minister.

The decision was intended to resolve a dispute between Defense Minister Mikhail Fedorov and Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine Alexander Syrsky. Instead, it triggered a wave of public anger. Protests have continued for five days in Kiev and other Ukrainian cities, with demonstrators demanding Fedorov’s return and Syrsky’s resignation. Participants have carried signs criticizing the commander-in-chief’s handling of the war.

Amid the growing pressure, Zelensky has been holding consultations with corps and brigade commanders. NZZ argues that these talks suggest the original decision was made too hastily.

Fedorov later met with Zelensky. The newspaper believes the former minister may have been offered the post of coordinator for defense technologies, but refused it.

NZZ also reported that officials in Kiev are already considering possible candidates to replace Syrsky as commander-in-chief.

Fedorov had previously left the Defense Ministry after a conflict with Syrsky. Protests against his removal were also held outside the Ukrainian embassy in Warsaw. As the demonstrations continued, Zelensky acknowledged the possibility of changes in the country’s military leadership.
