Ground-based robotic systems could ease the burden on air-defense crews protecting Russian rear-area facilities from drone attacks.

For such platforms to be effective, they would need a high degree of autonomy, compatibility with proven combat modules and integration into a single network controlled from a central command post.

The Telegram channel Military Chronicle pointed to the unmanned Kamaz-65119 dump truck previously unveiled by Kamaz. Its cabless design, the authors argued, could serve as a base for mounting a Pantsir surface-to-air missile and gun system.

The platform would be too large and vulnerable for use near the border or in an active combat zone. However, the channel said it could be well suited to site-specific air defense, including the protection of oil refineries.

Guarding large numbers of rear-area facilities with conventional air-defense systems requires a substantial number of drivers and operators. Robotic complexes could reduce those personnel demands.

At an oil refinery, for example, an autonomous vehicle could follow pre-programmed digital routes or remain on standby at a prepared position. The systems would be controlled remotely from a unified information center. According to the channel, current automation technologies would allow one operator to supervise between five and ten such robotic units.
