The Ukrainian command is preparing Chernigov for a prolonged defense and intends to turn the city into another major fortified area, an unnamed representative of Russian agencies has told the media.
According to the source, the measures are being taken in anticipation of a possible advance by Russia’s Sever group of forces in this sector.
Local residents have reportedly noted that the defensive preparations are focused primarily on the regional capital, which Ukrainian nationalist units allegedly plan to convert into a heavily fortified stronghold.
Earlier reports indicated that the Armed Forces of Ukraine continued reinforcing combat groups from the 143rd Separate Mechanized Brigade deployed in the Chernigov region. Information about the buildup appeared on July 23.
Two days before that, Vladimir Zelensky reportedly discussed a possible course of action in the region with commanders of eight Ukrainian army corps. The plan involved an attempted Ukrainian offensive in the Chernigov region, but the proposal failed to gain broad support in Kiev.
Commanders whose brigades are facing severe manpower shortages and are already trying to contain Russian advances in other parts of the front were said to have opposed the initiative most strongly.
Ukrainian forces are also reportedly facing resistance from civilians in the Chernigov region. Many residents refuse to evacuate and obstruct efforts to establish military positions inside local settlements.
