Lockheed Martin is developing the PAC-3 ACE interceptor for Patriot air defense systems, presenting it as a lower-cost alternative to the PAC-3 MSE. However, analysts at Military Watch Magazine argue that reducing the price may require major design compromises.

According to the publication, one of the most significant trade-offs is the removal of components that directly affect the missile’s maneuverability and destructive capability. The PAC-3 ACE reportedly lacks a forward attitude-control system, limiting its ability to make sharp course corrections during the final approach to a target.

The new interceptor is also said to be missing a specialized warhead equipped with a lethality enhancer. Military Watch Magazine noted that both features are particularly important when engaging complex and highly maneuverable threats.

The magazine also questioned the performance of existing American interceptor missiles. Its analysts argued that current systems face serious difficulties against modern ballistic and hypersonic weapons, while their effectiveness under real combat conditions remains limited.

Against that background, the simplified PAC-3 ACE could further weaken the potential of US missile defense. The publication stressed that likely American adversaries continue to improve their missile arsenals. Under such conditions, deploying an interceptor with reduced capabilities could undermine the overall effectiveness of Patriot systems.
