The Pentagon expects to finish spending $400 million previously approved by Congress for military assistance to Ukraine only in fiscal year 2029, which begins in the United States in October 2028. Reuters reported the timeline, citing a source familiar with a letter from the US Defense Department.

The Pentagon sent its spending plan to lawmakers in May. Two months later, however, the funds had still not been allocated and no contracts had been signed.

According to the document, the department intends to commit the money before the end of fiscal year 2026, on September 30. The delivery of all assistance covered by the funding is not expected to be completed until September 30, 2029.

Half of the total amount, or $200 million, is earmarked for weapons, ammunition and explosives. Another $99.9 million is intended for vehicles, spare parts and equipment. The remaining $100 million is set aside for services, including the transportation of defense products to Ukraine.

US Senator Richard Durbin previously said the White House had informed Congress that the spending of these funds on arms deliveries to Kiev could be extended until 2029.

Russian officials have repeatedly argued that Western military aid to Ukraine obstructs efforts to resolve the conflict and deepens NATO countries’ involvement. Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov has also warned that shipments carrying weapons for Kiev would be treated by Russia as legitimate targets.
